Sieve Simulation separates size data into size classes that are defined in terms of sieve mesh openings. It can be used to predict the actual sieve analysis of a sample.

Sieve simulation is available for four measures: Equivalent Circular Area, Bounding Rectangle Width, Fiber Width and Feret Width. Sieve data is computed only for these measures because actual sieves characterize non-spherical powders by particle width, the short dimension of the particle.

To use the sieve simulation feature, first enable it before starting a run. Select the option in Analysis Conditions / Measures, as shown.

Then select the desired sieve sizes to simulate in Analysis Conditions / Sieve Sizes, which lists standard sizes of the U.S. series. Any set of sizes may be selected and certain sizes can be omitted if desired.

The example below shows ECAD data from a run of about 50000 particles. The sizes run from about 6 microns to 186 microns. The numbers on the sieve axis are the sieve number, not microns. The first sieve bin (Pan) is unusually high because of the presence of many fine particles smaller than the smallest mesh size (20 microns).

Because actual sieve data represents weights, the simulated sieve data is normally displayed with volume weighting rather than number:
